Zamyatin was born in Lebedyan, Tambov Governorate, the son of a Russian Orthodox priest. He abandoned Christianity at an early age, became a Bolshevik, and was repeatedly arrested, beaten, imprisoned, and exiled for his party activities. After studying engineering for the Imperial Russian Navy, he was sent to England in 1916 to supervise icebreaker construction, returning to Russia in time for the October Revolution.
